There is a quote from the great Hall of Fame football coach Vince Lombardi about leadership. 

“Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.”

While there is no arguing with Coach Lombardi’s leadership skills and acumen, he may have missed a crucial element when describing leadership. Perhaps the quote should read, “Highly effective leaders are made, they are not born.”

There are some inherent characteristics of leaders which people exhibit at an early age. Just observe any group of young children at play and, invariably, one of them will begin organizing and steering the group into activities or games. While it is possible some of those leadership traits are learned, there is almost certainly a born-into aspect regarding leadership.

However, just like a gifted-athlete must continually work to harness his or her ability to become one of the all-time greats, a gifted-leader must employ that “hard effort” to achieve worthwhile personal and organizational goals.
